“Go ask out that girl over there.” An evil grin spread across Gilbert’s lips as he tried to point subtly(and failed). Antonio rolled his eyes at his antics. “Could you be any more rude, se pincha insoportable?” Of course, his scolding was all in good fun; Gilbert shook off the insult like it was nothing, even though he understood it completely from hearing it so often. He gave his friend’s arm a playful punch. “Well, how am I, the awesome Gilbert, supposed to know a girl like her’s name? She’s so insignificant!”
Francis let out a disapproving huff. “Everyone has significance in this world, Gilbert. Cette fille is no exception.”
“Who asked you, Frenchie? She is poor and we are not. There’s no reason to learn her name or to anything she says. Therefore, she is insignificant! Compared to the amazing and awesome Gilbert, she’s not even there!” This remark got an elbow in his stomach, courtesy of Antonio. “Don’t be so nasty, Gilbert! She can probably hear you from across the room.” True, Antonio didn’t know the girl. She flew under his radar, never speaking during school. In fact, this was the first time he’d noticed her at all. Still, he wasn’t one to treat anyone with cruelty, believing everyone deserved a chance.
“Who cares if she can?” Gilbert puffed, arms crossing against his chest. “That doesn’t change who she is.” Finally, Antonio, who’d gradually been getting more and more annoyed with the unnecessary insulting, slammed his elbow into Gilbert’s stomach so hard that the other boy went sprawling backwards, hitting the tile floor with a loud thud. “Hey!” The albino stood immediately and dusted himself off, as if the floor disgusted him.
“Don’t be mean for no reason! That girl hasn’t done anything to you. I won’t sit here and listen to you run your mouth and trash talk her!” Antonio snapped at him. He’d been getting more and more grouchy around his friends lately; Francis and Gilbert both assumed it had something to do with Lovino’s rejection. The Spaniard had been desperately in love with the little Italian, and when he finally found the strength to confess this, he’d been crushed to learn Lovino was already dating someone. He’d tried to be a good sport about it, but….as Francis said, love was as beautiful as it was painful, thorned like a rose. He’d been depressed and snappy for the past week now.
So naturally, Francis and Gilbert had taken it upon themselves to make him feel better. Their start; helping him get over Lovino.
“Well, if you like her so much, take the dare and ask her out!” Gilbert retorted. He’d leaned back against the school wall, his little bird tucked snugly into his collar, where he slept peacefully. Somehow the teenager had managed to sneak the little creature into the school, and no one had commented. Probably because they were worried about their families being crushed under the Beilschmidt influence.
The “Bad Friends Trio”, as the group the boys were referred to by students and teachers alike, all happened to come filthy rich families and had a powerful grip on the smallish city, most funds coming straight from their parents. Francis’ family was mostly famous for their hair and beauty products, Gilbert’s father’s position in the military, and Antonio’s wealth came from a huge profit….of tomato products. From fresh tomatoes themselves, to salsa to marinara sauce, Antonio’s family had something to do with it. That was just the way it was. People tended to be intimidated by their power or tried to use them for their own greedy purposes. This caused the three to stick together, not really letting anyone else into their circle, save the few special people that made a difference in their lives.
Like Lovino.
“Look, I know what you two are trying to do, and it’s really sweet…..but I thought I made it clear I don’t need any help.” Antonio said with a sigh. “I’ll be fine, te lo prometo.”
Au contraire, my dear friend, but most definitely need our help.” Francis butted in, nudging the sitting Antonio with a boot. “It is no fun to see you so gloomy and angry all the time….thus, it is of most importance you find another dashing young man or sweet damsel to sweep you off your feet! I would do it myself, but alas, I find myself bound to my dearests Matthieu and Ivan.”
Somehow, the frenchman had managed to get himself involved in Matthew and Ivan’s relationship; the three were now automatically associated with each other, girls squealed over how cute their threesome was, while Ivan was annoyed with Francis and overprotective of Matthew. Still, he managed to get daily kisses from the both of them, much to the enjoyment of the surrounding girls. Neither Gilbert or Antonio could understand just how he’d wormed his way in between the two, but they were past the point of asking.
Antonio crinkled his nose and laughed a little. “Like I would ever want you of all people sweeping me off my feet, Francis.” Francis pouted at this. “Why wouldn’t you? I am the most gorgeous being in this entire school!” As if to prove this point, he gave a dramatic little spin, pulling Antonio off the concrete and forcing him into a dance. Antonio let out snorts as he struggled to get away from his friend. “Bien, bien, You can help me, now let go!” Gilbert, who’d until that point had been watching with a bored expression, suddenly jumped up and fist pumped, grinning in victory and scaring the daylights out of his poor bird. “Ha! You heard that, Francis, now he has to let us help him!”
Francis released his Spanish friend after one more spin, letting a sparkling grin of his own light his face. “Magnifique! Don’t worry, Antonio, my dearest tomato-loving friend, we’ll have you fixed and happy in no time!” Antonio wasn’t sure of that, but his grouchiness was gone and he found he wasn’t in the mood to question it. Gilbert let out a smirk and shoved at Antonio’s shoulder. “Now go ask out that girl before I do it for you!” Luckily, he’d been keeping an eye on the girl-she’d sat down to read a book, waiting until lunch was over patiently.
Antonio rolled his eyes. He doubted he would actually like the girl much, and asking her out just seemed cruel. He’d end up leaving her; he just knew it. Asking girls out on a dare was never something he’d wanted to do. He never dared anyone to do it, either. It was a heartless act. Still….his friends were only trying to help him. And the girl wasn’t ugly or anything-just sort of….plain-looking. Not what he was used to, but surely nothing he couldn’t get used to. “Bien, I’ll ask her on a date. But don’t get your hopes up, she might say no.”
Gilbert huffed. “A girl like that, say no to you? Impossible. She’ll feel blessed to talk to you at all! Which is why fixing you will be easy!” Francis gave him a sharp kick to the shins in response, before turning back to Antonio. “Ignore him; if she says no, we will simply try again with another. But go try first, okay?” He grinned and patted his childhood friend on the shoulder. “Go get her, mon féroce espagnol tigre!
Antonio chuckled. “Si, si. I’ll be right back.” He stepped away from his friends, scanning over the courtyard and singling out the girl quickly. She’d stayed where she was, book open and headphones on, humming softly. So she liked music? There was a start. He stuck his hands in his pockets as he walked over to her. Gilbert and Francis giggled behind him. He stopped beside her, bending down to give her shoulder a gentle poke to get her attention. The girl blinked, looked up at him, jumped, then scrambled to find her ipod, pausing it and taking off her headphones before giving Antonio and apprehensive look. “Yes?”
Antonio smiled at her, still on his knees. It was a good thing, he now discovered, he’d asked out girls plenty of times before and carried conversations with them. It was definitely going to help out with the situation, at least. “Hola, señora. I was wondering what your name was-I saw you from across the courtyard, and I just had to ask.” He flashed her a brilliant smile. Yep, it was a good thing he was almost as a big as a player as Francis. The girl blinked and hid her blush in her scarf. “...I’m...um...____. ____ ____.”
“Ah, gracias, princesa! My name is Antonio Fernandez Carriedo. It’s such a pleasure to meet you.” He extended a hand for the girl to shake, who took it in her own after a moment of hesitation. “Hey, would you like to go on a date with me this Friday? I would really love it if you would!” He grinned while the girl’s mouth fell open slightly in surprise. “Wait...you want to go on a date?”  She couldn’t believe it, as Gilbert had predicted. “W-With me?” Antonio smiled sweetly and nodded.
The girl took a moment to collect herself before asking: “W-Where would be go?” Antonio blinked once and thought this over. “I don’t actually know, heh! Wherever you wanted to. We could see a movie or take a walk in the park, or just wander around until we got tired. I could pick you up an hour after school. Would that work alright, señora?” She hesitated before nodding once, a small smile finally making its way to her face. “I’d….like that, a lot. Here, I’ll write down my address really fast….You’re really okay with picking me up?”
“Of course!” Antonio smiled sweetly, watching as she blushed and scrambled to find a pen, then wrote down her address on the paper she was using as a bookmark. She handed it to him, and he carefully folded it and placed it in his jeans pocket. “Gracias! I’ll see you then, bueno?” The girl nodded, her smile growing a bit wider. “Okay, um. See you then.” She then returned to her book, and Antonio walked back towards the duo, whom had been watching the transition in rare silence. “She said okay.”
Gilbert grinned and replied with a snarky “See? I told you!”. Francis smiled and commented on his flirting skills. “Not what I was expecting from you, Churro! You’re almost as good as mwah.” Antonio smiled and laughed along with them, secretly feeling guilty. That poor girl….he asked her out because he had to, not because he wanted to. Oh well….surely the date couldn’t go too terribly? She’d seemed nice, after all.
Might as well wait and see.
